Christmas at the Stage Door Canteen, Shawnee Playhouse’s winter production, is an eye-popping show filled with bright costumes, music, comedy and a ton of memories.

Best described as a “docu-musical” and buttressed by hundreds of projections, the content of the production brings together a musical celebration of the Christmas season with a historical look at the history of the United Service Organization (USO) and, more specifically, New York City’s Stage Door Canteen during the war years of the 1940s.

With dozens of carols and secular songs of the Christmas season along with song hits from the 1940s, the show is centered upon a senior woman who recalls her days as a young aspiring actress in New York who, when not hopping from audition to audition, volunteered her time as a hostess at the famous canteen.

The stories she, or her young woman persona tell, include not only memories of the celebrities she met while serving as a hostess but, more importantly, her memories of the servicemen who were either going off to war or who just came back because of injury.

A roller coaster of emotions, Christmas at the Stage Door Canteen ranges from high comedy with big musical production numbers to thoughtful insight and historical background. It is definitely a show with appeal to audiences of all ages.
